Why did you decide to work together on the business?
We had worked together in the past and we really enjoyed it so working together for Candella came naturally to both of us.
Was it a steep learning curve when you began working together and what are the challenges of working together as a couple?
Working together in the past was a learning curve but we also had good fun at the same time. It is important to find time only for yourselves and detach from the business. Make your private life only about the two of you and the family.
Are there advantages to working together? If so, what are they?
We can’t speak for others, but we always find something new to talk about and motivate each other. The advantages for us are having the opportunity to spend more time together, easy communication and better understanding. We get to share our similar interests and have greater dedication towards our projects.
Are you always on the same wavelength with regards the brand development or design aspects of the business and if not how to you find common ground when it comes to such issues?
Working for Candella and developing our brand is a process, but we never make individual decisions, and no, we don’t always agree on everything and very often have different opinions and suggestions. We both get our inspiration from different sources including art, design, music etc. and our work is a collaboration based on mutual respect. Most of the time if we have disagreement we leave it for some time and look for advice from friends.
Do you have specific roles in the business and do these roles ever overlap?
Lots of business aspects of Candella overlap at times and we share our work, however Gosia is in charge of the fragrance side of Candella and Marcin processes the glass. We both share the work in the areas of social media, accounting, marketing, order processing etc.
Do you ever get any downtime or are you constantly thinking about and talking about the work/ business?
We make sure to get time off as, in our opinion, it is crucial for our relationship and for family life. Also, as a maker you need to clear your head every now and then - meet with friends, travel and be inspired. We usually travel when the Christmas season is over and we take the whole month of July off.
Do you have any advice for other couples who are considering going into business together?
Working together implies spending more time with each other, so be patient, loving, respectful and make sure to take time off work. It can be a really amazing and enjoyable journey which will make your relationship even stronger. Don’t forget to make jokes and have a good laugh - a sense of humour is a must! Good luck to all couples going into business together!
