We celebrated our first birthday this month with a special dinner at the home and studio of Edward Coveney and Esther Gerrard of the Elements of Action design practice. Flowers sprung from jugs and vases by BTU Glass, art works on the walls were by Jando Design, Me&Him&You and Denise Nestor who has designed the 2018 calendar at Irish Design Shop. Food came in serve-ware by Caulfield Country Boards and Diem Pottery and the table was set with plates by Karoart Ceramics and glasses by Emerald Crystal.

We cosied up while the evenings grew darker with some selected homewares from Design Ireland. We featured Kathryn Davey’s hand-dyed linen napkins woven in Co. Wexford and dyed using natural dyes in Kathryn’s Dublin studio. Other items perfect for inducing a hygge-like state are hand-made copper-leaf placemats by Slated, the Irish Wool Corrán thrown by Cushendale Woolen Mills and Roy Humphreys’ turned ash tealight holder.

In November, jewellery designer Martina Hamilton announced a collaboration with garden designer Leonie Cornelius as ambassador of her brand at Designyard in Dublin and we spoke to Ruth Power of Danu Ceramics about the inspiration behind her designs and how Instagram has helped grow her business.

This month we featured some of our favourite pieces from Design Ireland designers and makers including the Liberty Moon print by Jando Design, Edge Only’s new range of initial pendants, the Original Oak Bench by Cooper Furniture and Jennifer Slattery’s new embroidered linen tray — a beautiful and practical addition to her range of embroidered and printed linen products.

We visited jewellery designer Gemma O’Leary’s Dublin studio and spoke to her about her new Ammil range of  jewellery. The new collection is inspired by frost on leaves and is an abstract representation of leaves curling and falling in winter frost. Gemma will be at Arnotts until Christmas where she is offering a personalisation service to customers.

Store visits this month included a trip to Irish Design Shop - that little bastion of Irish design on Dublin’s Drury Street. Co-owners Clare Grennan and Laura Caffrey stock a myriad of Irish makers and designers — ceramics by Andrew Ludick and Adam Frew, candles from Brookfield Farm and Candella, bags from the Atlantic Equipment Project and their own selection of homewares entitled Áras which includes soap made by Clarkes of Dublin, hanging planters by Helen Faulkner and wooden wall hooks by Matt Jones.

Design Ireland also stopped by the Westbury Mall boutique of Elaine Madigan where the designer talked us through her current range of cashmere womenswear, from her collection of wardrobe essentials with classic v-neck and round-neck styles to her statement coat in six-ply cashmere yarn.

In November Design Ireland was delighted to speak to Jill de Búrca about her new collection of embroidered womenswear (as seen in the main image above), Siobhán Sacker from Gilded Hound about her beautiful new range of mirrors handmade in Dublin and also to Christina Sanne of Red Rufus whose delightful sock animals make the perfect gift for children as Christmas approaches.
