If you want to get your hands dirty and get stuck in to making a beautiful piece of design for yourself or your home then the new 'Experiences' section of the Design Ireland website offers a guide to some of the best workshops, classes, tours and demonstrations across the country.

From quick two-hour silver ring-making workshops to pottery classes that take place over several weeks, crystal cutting demonstrations to instrument-making classes, we invite you to dive in and explore the world of craft and design first hand with some of our talented craftspeople and designers.

Below is just a small selection of some of the workshops, classes, tours and demonstrations coming up countrywide over the next two months.

Criostal na Rinne:

On the 11th of May join Master Craftsman Eamonn Terry for a crystal making and cutting demonstration and workshop tour at the Criostal na Rinne studio in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford.

The area of An Rinne is located in the Waterford Gaeltacht - the Irish speaking part of the county - and is part of Ireland’s Ancient East.

Eamonn Terry has some 45 years experience making glass, having started his career in Waterford Crystal before establishing his own business in 1987.

Criostal na Rinne make both traditional and contemporary design items, often in collaboration with others, making this studio a must-see on the list of any lover of glass and crystal.

The tour is free.

KaroArt:

On May 25th, Karolina Grudniewska, founder of KaroArt in Harold’s Cross, Dublin, will take students through a one-day intensive hand-building pottery class at her studio.

Karolina will teach a slab building technique to create and decorate a set of dishes of your choice, be it planters, cups, bowls or trays.

Students will have the opportunity to learn from Karolina’s design guidance as well as her skill in pottery making and surface decoration.

Your work will be fired after the class and available for collection or to obtain by post within a four week period.

All materials are included and the course costs €109.

Chaïm Factor:

On Saturday 15th of June join Chaïm Factor at the beautiful Hill Picket Studio in Co. Wicklow for a one-day furniture making course.

Some participants may choose to visit for one day while others visit the studio on a repeated basis over a longer period of time in order to create more advanced pieces of furniture.

On the one day course, participants will be introduced to the use of hand tools such as chisels, wood planes and saws, and shown safe and correct methods of sharpening and taking care of tools.

They will then be introduced to a selection of Irish hardwoods such as Yew, Beech and Sycamore as well as exotic timbers and tone-woods which can be used in instrument making (another course they offer at the studio).

Instructors will also explain the various types of wood joints and basic design techniques to students and well as walking them through the various abrasives, adhesives and finishing techniques which can be used when designing and making a piece of furniture by hand.

The one day course at Hill Picket Studio costs €125.

Garrett Mallon:

Jewellery designer and goldsmith Garrett Mallon teaches jewellery making to both couples who wish to create their own wedding bands and to groups who wish to explore jewellery making via a half-day or full-day workshop in his workshop in The Carlingford Design House.

Perfect for those planning a trip to the scenic area and popular tourist destination of Carlingford Lough, Garrett can be contacted at his studio to arrange a class at a time that suits you.
