Irish prints: Five Minutes with Bold Bunny

Ali Jones is a graphic designer and creator of the BOLD BUNNY brand, or, "Warren Keeper and Bunny in Chief" as she's otherwise known. We posed some quick-fire questions to Ali about her "joy-bringing papery goodness", her Elevator collection of prints and everything in between.

How would you describe the style of Bold Bunny?

Humorous, colourful and contemporary with a Scandi-twist - I love monochrome but then I can't seem to help but throw some colour in too. I love graphic, bold designs with a dash of fun.

Why is humour so important to your brand?

I make sure I have a laugh each and every day. Humour is key to how I live and I hope that comes across in my work.

What does your product range include?

I create a range of (sometimes apparently disparate) products from greeting cards to prints to my new family calendar which I’m launching in time for the start of 2019. My cards cover every occasion and celebration from birthdays to new arrivals, “Get Well” to weddings. I like to have fun in terms of playing on words or with visuals but I’m not averse to a bit of sentimentality either. I also produce a limited range of products for babies and a range of prints for the home including my latest Elevator collection with another exciting print range in development for 2019.

Tell us more about your Elevator collection of prints.

It’s a range of six prints inspired by my love of music and featuring the familiar play, pause, stop, record, fast forward and rewind symbols. The prints are clean and sparse in design and feature inspirational quotes beneath the symbols such as “Pause. Inhale. Exhale” and “Play. Skip. Be Silly. Repeat”. It’s my musical take on mindfulness and on how music can help the soul.

These prints are more luxurious than some of your other products can you tell us about the materials you’ve used?

They are printed in Dublin on great quality 200g paper that’s made from eucalyptus pulp. Each print is then finished by hand with gold foil on an original John T. Marshall hot foil machine. The prints can be purchased unframed or there’s an option to purchase them in a lime wash frame with non-reflective glass and coloured slip.

Why did you want to explore the subject of mental health and mindfulness in your designs?

Life’s not perfect, it’s not a curated Instagram feed, and often what’s going on in the background of people’s lives may not be the same as the image that’s projected in public, especially in this age of social media. I wanted to promote a little self care and mindfulness through my designs which are also beautiful enough to grace any wall in your home or office. The idea will be carried through in my first ever charity Christmas cards this year supporting the charity Mental Health Ireland.
