Irish Gifts: Five Centuries of Candle Making and Dublin Dusk

Rathbornes 1488 was established in Winetavern Street in Dublin in the year 1488 while Botticelli painted his extraordinary works of art and before Christopher Columbus made landfall in the Americas. As one of the oldest registered companies in the world, Rathbornes 1488 has a truly extraordinary pedigree.

During the centuries that followed the establishment of the business, candle making thrived, methods and materials developed and Rathbornes 1488 lit up the streets of Ireland’s capital city and beyond. As one of the country’s leading suppliers of church candles, too, they illuminated the cathedrals and homes of Ireland.

The company has experienced many fates and fortunes - from the fire that gutted the factory and destroyed company records in 1895 to a change of ownership in 1912, a move to Dublin Port in 1925 and increased modernisation in 2001.

In 2015, the company added a unique, luxury brand of hand-poured candles to their repertoire - Beyond the Pale - the development of which took three years of research and a unerring commitment to producing the very finest quality candles, with the most luxurious scents, for the discerning modern customer.

The luxury candles in the Rathbornes 1488 Beyond the Pale collection include their best-selling Dublin Tea Rose, Oud & Patchouli and their Bitter Orange, Burnt Tar & Balsam candles.

Now Rathbornes 1488 have launched two other exquisite luxury candles - Dublin Dusk and Cassis Leaves & Jasmine - bringing the number of different scents in the collection to eight. Exclusively available in luxury department store Brown Thomas for the month of October, the candles will soon be available in many of the brand’s other stockists too, including Arnotts, Kilkenny, Meadows & Byrne and Avoca as well as online from the company website.

Dublin Dusk is uniquely poured with rich black wax and has rich “ozonic accords” (scents inspired by the Irish coastline) as well as the aromatic woody scent of smoked oud and aged cedar. Dark spicy tones of ginger, pepper and anise blend wonderfully with sweeter notes of patchouli and soft musk resulting in a rich, warm, moreish scent just perfect for dark winter evenings.

The Cassis Leaves & Jasmine scent is rich and fruity with floral top notes of Irish cassis (blackcurrant) leaves and a twist of jasmine with spicy clove on a base of green moss and wild heather. An altogether different, though no less wonderful, scent.
