The Gaelic name for Hawthorn is Huath (pron. ‘hoo-ah’) Huath is a symbol of harmony. Ireland was once covered in verdant woodland. The ancients relied on trees and plants for materials, fuel, protection and medicine. Certain trees were sacred. Druids celebrated their rituals in groves, while miscreants who cut down old and majestic trees were punished. The ancients lived by a 13-month lunar calendar; the months named after certain revered plants. Trees and shrubs were believed to embody noble characteristics.
